Published: 05/12/2014

Niagara Falls, NY - From May 4 - 10, the Niagara Tourism & Convention Corporation (NTCC) will celebrate National Travel and Tourism Week. The Niagara County Legislature, along with the mayors of Niagara Falls, Lockport and North Tonawanda will be proclaiming National Travel and Tourism Week in their respective communities.

At three events held throughout the week, NTCC will unveil to its stakeholders the organization's strategic direction for the next five years, in addition to reviewing its 2013 annual report and announcing the 2014-2015 marketing plan. The presentations are scheduled for Friday, May 2 at 11:30 am at Four Points by Sheraton, 7001 Buffalo Avenue, Niagara Falls; Thursday, May 8 at 8:30 am at Lockport Locks & Erie Canal Cruises, 210 Market Street, Lockport; and Thursday, May 8 at 4 pm at Riviera Theatre, 67 Webster Street, North Tonawanda. Please email reanna@niagara-usa.com to RSVP. NTCC will cap off the week with an open house at its Niagara USA Visitor Center, located at 10 Rainbow Boulevard in Niagara Falls on Friday, May 9 from 4:30 - 6:30 pm for stakeholders, elected officials and tourism representatives.

"Tourism is a major driver of economic growth for Niagara County," said John Percy, president and CEO, NTCC. "While we have grown to become a year-round destination, our peak tourism season is right around the corner and National Travel and Tourism Week provides us with an opportunity to come together and celebrate all that Niagara County has to offer, in addition to thanking those who work every day to make Niagara USA a world class destination."

Now in its 31st year, the National Travel and Tourism Week is the annual salute to travel in America and is celebrated during the first full week of May. Themed Travel Effect, this year's National Travel and Tourism Week is promoting travel's powerful benefits on the United States, local economics, business, communities and person lives. Nationwide, travel generates $2.1 trillion for the U.S. economy and supports 14.9 million American jobs.

In Niagara County, an estimated $526 million was spent by visitors here in 2013. Tourism is also the county's second largest employer, making up nearly 20% of the total workforce. In addition, tourism generates tax revenue for local taxpayers. In 2013, $65 million in state and local taxes were generated from tourism sales, which saved Niagara County taxpayers nearly $800 per household.

As a lead up to National Travel and Tourism Week, NTCC is in the midst of its "I Believe" local advertising campaign, which highlights tourism growth in the region. Comprised of print, radio and online ads, the campaign features various stakeholders highlighting their attraction and growth of their business with the assistance of the NTCC. Videos from several stakeholders are also available at niagara-usa.com/believe.

NTCC also recently launched a brand new website, niagara-usa.com, which encompasses all that the Niagara USA region, from Niagara Falls to Lockport to North Tonawanda, has to offer to visitors. It also provides trip planning tips, an events calendar, and the ability to book one's accommodations. Since the launch of the new website in April, 85 percent of visitors have gone to the site for the first time. The 2014 Niagara USA travel guide was also designed to complement the new website and now available at attractions, lodgings, shops and restaurants throughout Niagara County or for download at niagara-usa.com.
