FAQ

The Customer Service team at the Niagara Tourism and Convention Corporation get a lot of questions from visitors located throughout the world. Here are the most popular ones and the answers! Some of these are pretty funny and some are very common misconceptions.

1. What time do the Niagara Falls turn off? The falls are never turned off. Power intakes control the flow reducing it in the night, but they are never turned off.

2. Can I see the Niagara Falls from the Statue of Liberty? Niagara Falls and NYC are over 400 miles a part.  Unless you have super powers, you won’t be able to see it.

3. How far is it to walk to New York City from the falls? According to google maps, about 4 days and 23 hours.

4. If I am a US citizen do I need a passport to visit Niagara Falls USA from a different state? If you are a US citizen you don’t need a passport to visit the United States from the United States.

5. When do the falls open? They’re always ‘open’.  The State Park is open 24/7, so you can see the falls at 3a.m. if you’d like!

6. What time do the rainbows come out? Niagara Falls is infamous for its rainbows.  The rainbows typically are always there but it varies on the sunlight.  There is no specific time they are shown.

7.  Do I need a passport to ride the Maid of the Mist? No. You only need a passport when entering the United States from a different country, like Canada.

8. Are there 2 Niagara Falls? There are 2 cities named Niagara Falls, one is in NY, USA the other is in Ontario, Canada.  The actual Niagara Falls consists of three separate waterfalls; the American, Bridal Veil, and Horseshoe/Canadian Falls.

9. Has the falls ever frozen over? No, the Niagara Falls and Niagara river has never completely frozen solid. The Niagara Falls has had extremely limited flow and only completely stopped once in the winter, due to ice jams.  Because of the immense pressure, the Falls would be nearly impossible to freeze over.  Ice jams are now prevented from occurring.
