According to the legend, those who suffer a violent death, tend to remain long after their life is taken generally as evil spirits haunting their surrounds and warding off those who are unwanted.
At Youngstown’s Old Fort Niagara, an eerie well and a deadly duel have led to centuries of rumored hauntings, following the death of French Military Officer. Stories of haunted happenings in the historic French Castle have transcended several wars and conflicts and still today, experts believe a French general officer roams the halls of Old Fort Niagara’s most iconic building. It is said that at midnight, the headless body of the Frenchman was often seen sitting on the edge of the old well. This was the site of his murder and his headless body was disposed of in the well.
For those who hope to investigate such hauntings for themselves, this story is told daily at Old Fort Niagara, Scott Avenue, Youngstown, N.Y., 14174. www.oldfortniagara.org.
