Lockport, N.Y.- A new display at the Niagara County History Center is a patriotic commemoration of 9/11.

To commemorate the 10^th anniversary of the tragic events which took place on September 11, 2001, the Niagara County History Center is offering a new exhibit to pay tribute to all who were and continue to be affected by this national day of infamy and mourning.

 The centerpiece of the new 9/11 Exhibit is a stunning “Attic Window Quilt” made by Linda Hunter of Lockport. The quilt is entitled, “Windows of Western New York,” and contains 54 photos including one of each of the sites that were hit by terrorism on Sept.11.  Hunter described making the quilt as a therapeutic experience for her and hopes that by sharing these images, others can continue in their own healing. 

All of the photos contained in the quilt depict a sign of patriotism or expression of mourning that took place immediately after the tremendous loss of lives on that day. Most of the photos are from Lockport and other parts of Niagara County. The photos are combined in an attic window quilt which features a “sash and sill” around each window.  The 9/11 Quilt has been displayed all over Western New York and in other parts of the United States.

Hunter has been making quilts for over 35 years and is also a teacher and quilt appraiser, certified by the American Quilter’s Society. She also serves as a lecturer on the topic of quilting and is available for consultant work. Hunter has appeared on area cable network LCTV with the Kenan Quilters Guild. The History Center is pleased to offer Hunter’s quilt exhibit to the general public, free of charge, throughout September. The quilt can be viewed at the History Center, 215 Niagara Street, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Saturday.
