Mary Ann Hess, owner of Niagara’s Honeymoon Sweets, is introducing a new line of chocolate bars commemoratingNiagara Fallsdaredevils and history-making individuals past and present. The bars showcase events from the Falls’ region with a portion of the proceeds benefiting area organizations.
Two of these new designs are currently for sale for $10 each, with $1 of the proceeds donated to a different organization.
The first, “BarrelOverNiagaraChocolateCandyBar,” is a reproduction of the barrel used by Annie Edson Taylor in 1901 when she became the first person to survive a trip over the falls in a barrel. Proceeds will benefit theOakwoodCemeteryinNiagara Falls. Taylor and otherNiagara Fallsdaredevils are buried in the “Stunters Section” of the cemetery.
The second design, the “Niagara FallsDaredevilCandyBar,” features a tight-rope walker voyaging across the falls. The nearly half pound slab of chocolate displays the American andHorseshoe Fallscomplete with details of seagulls, foamy waves, and rapids. Proceeds from this bar will benefit the Heart, Love and Soul food pantry, a non-profit organization in Niagara Falls dedicated to feeding those in need and providing opportunities to improve their quality of life.
A third mold is currently in production and will depict children flying kites over the falls as a tasty tribute to those who improved relations between New Yorkand Canada. The Niagara Lion’s Club will receive proceeds from the sales of this bar.
Hess is creating a separate company called Niagara Daredevil Chocolates to feature the new line of chocolate confections. She hopes to promote theNiagara Fallscommunity by using the excitement of the past to help support and inspire the future.
Vendors will be selling the chocolates on Old Falls Street from June 14 until June 17, as part of the excitement surrounding Nik Wallenda’s walk across the falls. The bars can also be purchased at theOakwoodCemetery,763 Portage Road; The Town of Niagara Lion’s Club,8108 E Britton Drive; and Heart, Love and Soul Food Pantry,939 Ontario Ave. Hess has also made the bars available for purchase on her website, www.niagarashoneymoonsweets.com.
