Top Ten Facts about Niagara Falls

1.The ‘Niagara Falls’ is actually comprised of 3 separate waterfalls; American Falls, Horseshoe Falls, and Bridal Veil falls.

2. Approximately 750,000 gallons of water goes over the falls each second.

3. 50 – 75% of water flowing along the Niagara River is diverted from going over the Niagara Falls by hydroelectric power generating stations.

4. Water is diverted from going over the falls in order to slow the rate of erosion allowing them to maintain their current shape.

5. The Niagara Falls State Park is the oldest state park in the United States and was established in 1885.

6. At one time, Goat Island was suggested to be an area for circus’ by P.T. Barnum.

7. Each year the Cave of the Winds’ decks are torn down and re-built. The decks cannot withhold the pressure from the ice buildup in the winter.

8. The flow of the Niagara Falls is controlled by water intakes. “Under an international treaty (between the USA and Canada), the flow of water over Niagara Falls is reduced during the night to allow more of the water to flow into intakes used for power generation. This plan ensures that the falls’ natural beauty remains unaffected during prime viewing hours.”

9. The flow of the Falls stopped only twice in history. Once in 1848 due to an ice jam and once in 1969 when it was ‘tuned off’ to investigate rock removal and repair.

10A 63-year-old school teacher was the first person to survive going over the falls. She did it in an oak barrel.
