Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

The Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum is the only museum in the world housed in an authentic, original carousel factory building. And it’s right here in Niagara County!

The Allan Herschell Company was founded in 1915 in North Tonawanda, New York. Allan Herschell had previously been a partner in the earliest of the area’s carousel firms: the Armitage Herschell Company in 1873, and later with the Herschell-Spillman Company in 1901. (more…)

Top Ten Facts about Niagara Falls

Monday, June 15th, 2009

1.The ‘Niagara Falls’ is actually comprised of 3 separate waterfalls; American Falls, Horseshoe Falls, and Bridal Veil falls.

2. Approximately 750,000 gallons of water goes over the falls each second.

3. 50 – 75% of water flowing along the Niagara River is diverted from going over the Niagara Falls by hydroelectric power generating stations.

4. Water is diverted from going over the falls in order to slow the rate of erosion allowing them to maintain their current shape.

5. The Niagara Falls State Park is the oldest state park in the United States and was established in 1885.

6. At one time, Goat Island was suggested to be an area for circus’ by P.T. Barnum.

7. Each year the Cave of the Winds’ decks are torn down and re-built. The decks cannot withhold the pressure from the ice buildup in the winter.

8. The flow of the Niagara Falls is controlled by water intakes. “Under an international treaty (between the USA and Canada), the flow of water over Niagara Falls is reduced during the night to allow more of the water to flow into intakes used for power generation. This plan ensures that the falls’ natural beauty remains unaffected during prime viewing hours.”

9. The flow of the Falls stopped only twice in history. Once in 1848 due to an ice jam and once in 1969 when it was ‘tuned off’ to investigate rock removal and repair.

10A 63-year-old school teacher was the first person to survive going over the falls. She did it in an oak barrel.

Maid of the Mist

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

Thinking about coming to Niagara USA?  Here is a first-hand account on taking the Maid of the Mist boat ride.  A travel writer from England recently visited the Niagara region and the Niagara Tourism and Convention Corporation had an opportunity to show him around the city. Our first stop was the Maid of the Mist where we were greeted by wonderful state parks employees. Before going to the loading dock we went to the Observation Tower and viewed the Niagara Falls from an elevated deck. After taking a look at the magnificent power of the falls from above, it was time to get up close and personal. We took an elevator to the loading dock and put on our blue souvenir ponchos.

Before we knew it we were getting a little misted, and then, as the boat bobbed in the water right next to the falls, we were suddenly soaked. It was the most fun I have had in a while and our travel writer had his poncho hood down and was soaking in the glory. The Maid of the Mist is a must see for any traveler and visitor to the Niagara Falls. Even Brad Pitt and his sons took a ride in April.

You can purchase tickets to the Maid of the Mist iondividually or along with the Discovery Pass.  The Discovery Pass includes admission into the Maid of the Mist, Cave of the Winds, Aquarium of Niagara, Niagara Adventure Theater, Niagara Gorge Discovery Center, and Niagara Scenic Trolly.

Best of Niagara

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

I am a Niagara Falls native and that alone has given me the opportunity to try some of the best food and products in our area. Here are some of my favorites with some input from the folks at the Niagara Tourism and Convention Corporation. Please feel free to post your own!!

Pizza: The taco pizza at Honey’s, near the Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls, is fantastic but for a slice of classic cheese and pepperoni Leon’s Pizza in the The Summit mall wins.

Taco: Everyone knows Niagara County is home to Colosso Taco! Pick one up on Pine Avenue and enjoy.

Beef on Weck: Carson’s, on the corner of Rt. 31 and Upper Mountain Rd., is a hometown favorite and in an unexpected place. They’re actually suppose to be known for their pies!

BBQ: Tie. The Brickyard on Center St. in Lewiston and One Eyed Jacks on Transit Rd. in Lockport top the list (and created some controversy here in the office!).
