Nik Wallenda may walk Niagara Falls on June 15, but there's another reason to stay in Niagara USA for the weekend
After Nik Wallenda walks Niagara Falls the evening of Friday, June 15, celebrate his historic dare at Niagara Wine Trail's Wine & Cheese event, sponsored by Yancey's Fancy Artisan Cheeses. Tickets are good June 17-19, and include a wine tasting and cheese pairing at each winery, and a commemorative wine glass from the starting winery. Prices are $20 per person, pre-sale online; and $25 per person at the door.
The Niagara Wine Trail is the fastest growing wine trail in the United States, with 16 wineries. Niagara Wine Trail wineries were recently honored with gold, silver and bronze awards, in addition to a Sweepstakes Winner Award, at the 31st Annual Riverside International Wine Competition.
Three of the Niagara Wine Trail wineries were awarded with 11 total medals. This included Arrowhead Spring Vineyard's Sweepstakes Winner (a combined honor of Best Dessert Wine and Chairman’s Award) for their 2009 Vidal Ice Wine. Wine Judge Tom Bohr was noted the 2009 Vidal Ice Wine from Arrowhead Spring Vineyards featured, "Intense nose with copious amounts of botrytis and a great mouth feel. A well balanced, delicious wine.” Arrowhead Spring Vineyards was also awarded a Gold Award - 2008 Meritage, Silver Award - 2010 Syrah, and Bronze for their 2009 Chardonnay. Leonard Oaks Estate Winery was honored with a Gold Award for their 2009 Vidal Blanc Ice Wine and a Silver Award for a 2011 Dry Riesling. Schulze Vineyards and Winery were also the recipients of 4 Silver Awards: 2011 Siegfried, 2011 Vidal Blanc, Niagara and 2010 Block Three Ice Wine (Catawba) and a Bronze Award for their 2010 RCR (Port).
At a recent visit to Eveningside Vineyards, owner and wine maker Randy Biehl poured his award-winning 2010 Reserve Chardonnay. Aged five months in new America/French barrels, it's spicy and citrus on the nose; with hints of vanilla on the palate. A soft lemon on the finish makes it an ideal wine for early summer.
Riesling is a popular grape variety that performs exceptionally well on the Niagara Wine Trail, situated in between the Niagara Escarpment and Lake Ontario. At the same tasting at Eveningside, their 2011 Dry Riesling was bright and lively, with apricot, pear and honeydew on the nose, and crisp apple on the palate. Another perfect vintage for mid-June.
No matter which winery you may visit while in Niagara USA, you are sure to "Uncork a Natural Wonder".
